Show SUSC gets 'ceremonial' uniforms The much talked about and long sought after White House Ceremonial Uniforms have arrived at Southern Utah State College to be used by the marching band. Dr. Eugene T. Woolf, who initiated the acquition of the uniforms in December of 1977, saw his efforts pay off this past week when eighty of the uniforms arrived on campus. "They were stripped of all brass and other oramentation, but the basic uniform was intact," he said. Worn only once by the White House guard under President Richard Nixon's administration, the uniforms - have subsequent .. been handled by the Central Intelligence Agency and the General Servies Administration. Disposal of the 137 uniforms, of which SUSC received 80, has been a long drawn out process Since the uniforms were a part of the official equipment inventory it was determined that they could not be sold or given away. That complicated the acquisition but with the help of the Utah State Agency for Surplus Property, the necessary "red tape" was completed allowing the college to receive them. Including in the acquisition were white tunics, black parade caps, white dress hats and aiguilettes. One of the conditions in accepting the uniforms from the federal government indicates that the college "shall not sell, trade, lease, lend, bail, encumber, cannibalize or dismantle for parts or otherwise dispose of the uniforms; or remove them permanently per-manently for use outside of the state; or transfer title to the uniforms directly or indirectly; or do or allow anything to be done that would cause the uniforms to be seized, taken into execution, attached, stolen, damaged, or destroyed." "SUSC was the major recipient of . the uniforms," Dr.Woolf stated. The uniforms are white, black, and gold in color and will be used by the music department at SUSC" he concluded. |
