Show Census Taking Progress Satisfactory Census District Manager Karla Bergeson, reports good progress in this area lor the 1980 Census of Population and Housing. Consus takers started the house-to-house canvass March 31, picking iup filled-out filled-out questionnaires distributed earlier by the Postal Service. Census takers carry large portfolios boldly lettered "U.S. CENSUS--1980," and wear red, white and blue badges bearing the U.S. Department of Commerce seal and the words "Census Enumerator, Official Credential." Anyone without this official credential claiming to be a census taker should be reported to the police. The district manager said that residents can speed up the big count by having their questionnaires properly filled out and ready for the census takers. This will save both the householder's and the census taker's time. , At some residences the census taker asks additional questions about each person and about the house, questions that are being asked nationwide of a sample of households. In places of more than 2500 population ' one household in six is in the sample. In places under 2500 it is one in. every two households. The manager emphasized that all information about individuals and their homes furnished to the Census Bureau is held in absolute confidence under Federal law. The information cannot be examined by anyone other than census employees who are sworn to silence, and thus cannot be used for investigation, taxation, or regulation. |
