Show ! tatosuioood a States call himself a fellow Sagebrush Rebel, I think compliments us all. And I think It's starting to help people realize that this is not a wild eyed movement to give our public lands to private developers, that this is a movement to bring the control of the lands back to the states and local governments, govern-ments, the people who can manage the lands better with more feeling and Intensity Inten-sity and for the benefit of the people within the state and the whole nation. And, of course, it's a very, very productive and Intellectually sound movement. Andthat's what really has these people peo-ple really running out there. The extremists who are constantly con-stantly trying to find fault with it, but really can't find fault with it If thev read the legislation and look at c Question: What's the next c step for your Sagebrush Re- 3 bellion Bill - the one that gives the states a crack at Q getting title to federal lands? 3 Senator Orrln Hatch: Wll, 3 of course, we have just had a very successful conference in Salt Lake City with 12 P states represented, about 3j 650 people there, major me - 3 dia sources from all over the country including our own q state media people, and that P conference was basically an , intellectual conference to 3 provide the intellectual ba- sis and justification for the Sagebrush Rebellion. It was 3 interesting, one of the things they expect to bring out is 'a monograph that will give the intellectual and econom - z ic reasons why the Sage- brush Rebellion is better for the country and better for the states involved them - 3 selves. Shortly after I had spoken at the Sagebrush Rebellion Re-bellion conference and participated par-ticipated In the conference, I spoke at the Utah Farm' Bureau, one of the deans from USU had spoken and said they did the economic analysis of the benefits to Utah and wondered why In the world would anybody want and what's going to happen to Utah if .we actually have the Sagebrush Rebellion. But by the time the study was finished, the question was What will Utah do If the Sagebrush Rebellion Is not successful. Question: What effect will President Elect Reagan's endorsement have on the Sagebrush Rebellion? Senator Hatch: It certainly cer-tainly Isn't going to hurt It any. As you know, to have a President of the United all the protections that we have built in. |
