It allows al-lows the Interior Secretary ; to issue non mining leases on land adjacent to current oil shale leases. That will ; allow a company to build processing plants, disposal sites and other activities . not involving actual mining itself, but adjacent to the mined land. It is a signlfl- . cant step in expediting the development of the oil shale process. There are about 1.8 ' trillion barrels of oil shale under some 17,000 square miles In Utah, Colorado and ' Wyoming. About one third, ' or 600 billion barrels are now recoverable. That ' equals 90 of the known world reserves of con-I con-I ventional oil and at cur- I rent rates of consumption I would fulfill UJS. needs for I 100 years. |
