Show Citing 'damaging' Carter Administration leaks of classified information during dur-ing hearings on the SALT II treaty, UJ5. Senator Jake Garn endorsed calls for a Senate investigation of recent re-cent Administration dis closures about the so called 'Stealth' bomber. 'The Stealth leaks are new evidence of the Administration's Administra-tion's pattern of leaking sensitive sen-sitive national security information in-formation for political gain. The same thing occurred during the SALT II deliberations. deliber-ations. It must be stopped. Garn noted that the Administration Ad-ministration last year leaked information to the news media concerning the use of U-2 reconnaissance planes in Turkey to monitor Soviet missile tests. Within two hours of a Senate committee commit-tee briefing, Administration sources leaked the story to the press. They apparently hoped to allay fears and concerns con-cerns about the U.'s ability to verify key provisions of the SALT II treaty. Garn said the disclosure about Stealth an experimental experi-mental aircraft which would use new materials and design de-sign features to hide from Soviet radar was designed to distract Congressional and public attention away from the Administration's disastrous defense record. We need a new manned bomber as soon as possible, not longterm research which may or may not bear fruit.. The Administration would like us to place our faith in a bomber which won't be ready for a dozen years, rather than taking the necessary neces-sary steps to protect ourselves our-selves from a very real Soviet threat.
