Show Deer E-Suimters take to the hills The annual general season deer hunt opens Saturday, and the exodus to mountain hunting camps has been underway un-derway all week as hunters drag their trailers to their favorite camp; and make preparations to be in camp for the opening shot. "Deer hunting opportunity in southwestern Utah should for the most part, be similar simi-lar to that of the last two or three years', said Chris Chaff in, DWR Information Officer. There have been noticeable changes in hunting hunt-ing dates, with a few units closed entirely to hunting. Our preseason deer classification clas-sification has revealed most herds in this part of the state to be in good shape. Southern Utah is divided pretty much into two areas in terms of deer population; the herd units of Beaver County and those north of that boundary. Units on the south have shown more depressed de-pressed deer numbers and recovery from bad weather and other factors affecting their population has been much slower than hoped for. The Beaver County For-cast For-cast Success similar to recent years (30) is expected. ex-pected. Fawn production has been good and many small bucks should be found on Beaver Mountain. Deer will be scattered as many springs and seeps are prev-clent. prev-clent. Increased summer activity has also scattered deer, with larger deer taking tak-ing to the higher, heavily timbered areas. In the Mineral. Mountains deer are often found, in the scrub oak areas where most of the leaves are still on. Iron and Washington Co: Hunter pressure will most likely be down somewhat. Hunter success Is expected expect-ed to be around 25, with small bucks accounting for most of the harvest. Iron County units are part of the seven day season hunt. The east side of Unit 61-A, Pine Valley Mountain in Washington County, is closed. Desert units ar " among the slowest incoming back to the desirable number of deer. South Sevier County Overall success in Unit 48-Monroe 48-Monroe Mountain, should be good. Heavy winter losses may produce spotty success on the west side of the unit from Glenwood south, to Dry Creek. In the Flshlake area hunting should be good. Fawn production has been good for several years. |
