Show March of Dimes givers, found it hard to make a pledge pled-ge Sunday in Milford. The COUNTY NEWS number was again flashed on the TV screen as in the past, but there was no one here to take their phone calls. We don't know just what happened, but we suppose that someone goofed up on making contact with local volunteers. For years.the Jeep Patrol has manned the COUNTY NEWS phone during dur-ing the telerama. We got a call a couple of weeks ago and agreed they could list our telephone. Evidently the state organization didn't contact the Jeep Patrol, or couldn't find someone to take calls and pick up pledges. Whatever happened no pledges were taken in Milford, Mil-ford, and we doubt that many took the effort to call Salt Lake. We don't blame local volunteers for not coming through when they are not contacted until the last minute. min-ute. That's been the case for several years. The telerama tele-rama was once enthusiastically enthusias-tically received locally. But if the state organization does not ge t it 's ac t to ge the r , the y . will get few local contributions. contri-butions. - 0 MX has received the best support in Beaver County of anywhere in the proposed de -ployment area. This should not be interpreted inter-preted to be an endorsement of the MX deployment itself, it-self, since few in Beaver County are in a position to pass judgement on the military mili-tary necessity, or deterrent deter-rent value of MX. It is the thinking of many that if mx is to be built, that the location of a major base andor assembly base, near Milford could provide some positive aspects, which will not be present if only the missile is deployed. - 0 - It's a well known fact the Milford and Beaver areas are economically depressed. Business, schools and industry indus-try are at the lowest ebb in many years. A major base would bring employment, some civilian population increase, and some off base military personnel. per-sonnel. Most military personnel per-sonnel would live on base and have little impact other than on recreational fa-cailities. fa-cailities. In fact, we've just about planned and zoned ourselves our-selves to death, getting ready for the big one that never happened. 0 - Milford's sewer and water are in good shape, and with additional water storage -which has been on the drawing draw-ing boards for eight years, could handle several times It's present population. Approximately 1500 building lots have been annexed or platted in preparation for annexation for several years. That's three times our present housing, and there is plenty more room next to the city limits without with-out infringing on the South Milford farming area. Our schools could conservatively conser-vatively triple their present enrollment without crowding or construction. If more is needed, another elementary school and new high school would fill the bill, converting convert-ing the present high school to a middle school. We've got a good airport with room (already pur-' chased) for expansion. The Union Pacific can handle even the largest freight, and Amtrak connections are available with daily stops both ways. - 0 -We have much to offer, a major base, and such a base would offer much to us. MX may be the worst or the best idea the military has ever come up with. Very likely we'll never know for sure. Delta is struggling to prepare pre-pare for IPP, if it is built. Ely is looking at a similar size power plant. Neither will provide the necessary front money for services that will be demanded. Though eventually the economics will balance out, the taxpayers tax-payers will shoulder the initial ini-tial burden. MX will come with front money, and impact funds, so Beaver County taxpayers won't have to carry the early ..-stages of growth. Services have to come before the peo-ple peo-ple canwhethe'fTt's'p'rivate'' industry or military. Whether or not MX is built will be decided in Wash -ington, D.C, not in Utah. But if It is, Beaver County, along with Western Utah, will un-, un-, doubtedly have missiles. A major base will make the missiles much more palatable. HERE'S MORE ABOUT' Just Between would be alleviated by direct funding grants so as not to place a burden on local tax payers. - 0 - We applaud the people of Beaver County who have taken a sensible attitude toward to-ward MX. We think the decision de-cision of the Milford City Council to write a letter to welcome a major base near Milford was a good one. They did not endorse the project as such. But, if MX is built, what better way to offset the negative aspects than by trying to gain a few positive aspects, that could make life easier for' all of us. i' - 0 -Certainly this attitude is better than that of Delta and Ely. On the one hand, they oppose MX In any shape or manner, but out of the other side of their mouth, say If you build MX anyway, we want the base and all economic gains. And on the quiet they let the Air |
