Show SIERRA CLUB OPPOSES WARNER VALLEY PROJECT The Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club announced its opposition to the Warner Valley Power Plant and accompanying ac-companying Alton coal mine this week. Their opposition is to the loss of scenic values at the Alton mine, five miles from Bryce Canyon National Park and to possible pollution from a coal fired power plant so near Zion National Park. They also object to withdrawals of water from the Virgin River. , They plan to start a cam -paign of public involvement and lobbying to stop construction. con-struction. Meanwhile, the Friends of the Earth have come out against the mining of Kai-parowits Kai-parowits coal, stating that the deep mining of coal and ancilary activities there would cause greater environmental en-vironmental destruction than that of the cancelled 3,000 watt Kaiparowlts power plant. Both groups contend there Is no adequate evidence that the additional electricity is needed. |
