South Summit remained in second as Piute and Gunnison moved up to 4th and seventh respectively, res-pectively, on convincing j wins. ! The Cowboys and Tigers i battled to a 52-51 contest for supremacy in Division I, as North Sevier slipped i by Beaver, 40-38, and Gun- nison walloped Enterprise, j 80-55. J Piute, the only team still undefeated, smacked Wayne, 92-58, to drop the Badgers, but Escalante wouldn't let Valley take advantage as they upset the Buffaloes, 77-73, while Panguitch broke out of the pack with a 75-61 win over Bryce Valley. The Tiger loss couldn't be pinned on super jock, Ken Jones, though, as he picked off 29 points and 17 rebounds. Ben Johnson had 25 for the Cowboys and WadeColeman, i with 10, was the only other player in double figures, as the Division I giants met. Gunnison, out to prove they are to be contended with, ripped off an 80-55 victory ' at Enterprise, after the Wolves had given both the league leaders a run for it in their last outings. Nay had 24, Lund 23 and Hill 15 for the Bulldogs. Truman i had 20, Staheli 10 and Simp- ! kins 9 for Enterprise. The score was tied 10-10 at the quarter, but Gunnison outscored the Wolves 26-6 in the second period, and weren't contested again. Beaver and North Sevier swapped the lead several times before the Wolves wiped out a 29-28 deficit in the fourth period to squeek out victory, 40-38. North Sevier led 8-4 at the quarter, and Beaver had a 15-13 half time lead. Hallows had 13 for North Sevier, while Blackner had 13 and Cox 10 for the Beavers. Piute took a 26-9 lead in the first period and led, 46-29, 46-29, 68-40, on the way to their 92-58 win over Wayne. The T -Birds got double figures fig-ures from Kelly Coon 14, Kim Dalton 15, Brian Jenkins Jen-kins 17, Kendall Dalton 13, and Lon Dalton 15. Scoring in double figures for Wayne ' were Capple 10, Behunin 14, Taylor 13, and Williams 13. Panguitch led all the way at Bryce Valley, 10-8, 29-23, 51-37, 75-61, behind Smith with 22, Henrie 15, C. Barney Bar-ney 14, and B. Barney 10. Chynoweth had 29, and Stock 13, for the Mustangs. In the week's upset, Escalante Es-calante broke away from a 59-58 third quarter lead for the 77-73 win. It was close all the way with Valley leading lead-ing the first quarter, 17-16, and the Moquis ahead, 35-32, 35-32, at halftime. D. Lamb had 19 for Valley, J. Hoyt 14, Frost 17 and W. Lamb 12. In double figures for Escalante were B. Brooks 22, D. Griffin 15, R. Lyman 25, and A. Bailey, 10. That brings the 01' Redhead's Red-head's picks to 56 to 13 for the year, and .812 percent, getting five of six for the week. This week's games are on GO AHEAD POINTS: Mark Whitney grabs two points to give the Tigers a 51 -49 lead with 18 seconds on the clock, but the Cowboy's Ben Johnson got two at the other end to tie it up, then sank a foul shot to give the Cowboys a 52-51 win over the Tigers. ..I... !, II I , ..ll.llll III ......I..IIII.I.II.IIIIIIIIIIIIHI... Parowan goes to ENTERPRISE. TheRams won at home but we don't think they can do it again at Enterprise. Beaver at MILFORD. The Beavers gave the Tigers one of their tougher games, and led most of the way in their earlier meeting. But the Tigers should be ready after last week's loss at Kanab, and want to hang on to that number two spot for the Robin. Rob-in. The Cowboys have to travel to GUNNISON, and the Bulldogs have been getting get-ting their second win down the stretch. They haven't lost in the second round, and we don't think they will tonight. Over in Division II Bryce Valley goes to ESCALANTE, and the Moquis proved they can be tough on home ground last week against Valley. PIUTE should smother the Panguitch Bobcats and we'll go with WAYNE at Valley. Games of the week should be the Bulldogs vs. Cowboys Cow-boys and Badgers vs. Buffaloes, Buf-faloes, but we suspect the Tiger cage will be packed with Beaver Countyites, and as usual when these rivals meet, it will be a tough game. DENNY MYERS grabs a rebound in the battle for ' Division I lead with Kanab last Thursday, and looks for someone to pass to. Denny is the smallest man on the Tiger team at 5'7", but a good shooter when he I takes the notion, and good on defense. |
