Show Editorially Speaking p- Poe& Coxnet U Open Letter if OPEN LETTER TO THOMAS CNEIL AND MORRIS UDALL t RE: Proposed legislation concerning every American You can't repeal the Mining Law of 1872, To quote our Christian History, "You know not what you do". The hue and cry to phase It out because It's antiquated, Remains a thorn between us that we've constantly debated. We've argued Hill we're tired and still you cannot see, Your comprehension won't expand, no matter what we plea. You're worried 'bout the saving of the lands for the viewing eyes, And our concern's production and, of course, free enterprise. Let's put aside our prejudice and study the whole scene, Have you ever read this mining law complete? Is what we mean, Do you know the reasons why this law, adopted long ago, Is still the basis for our lives? It certainly Is so. Do you really understand the words put down for all to read, That guarantees the freedom of Americans and their need? It's the base of all our tax laws, it's the guide for common men, To manage their own business, 'stead of serfdom days again. Did you study In your school books, understanding dukes and lords Who owned the whole of England, calling comon men "the hordes"? Do you recall the stories of that rascal, Robin Hood? And do you know it's bureaucrats who now lurk In the wood? Now good old free America Is circling 'round once more, Repeating history, following plans laid down in mankind's lore. We all know bureaucracy, alive since men got started. It always seems to mire down, with common sense departed. Now sharpen up qour wits and study, get your gray cells turning, Don't be like Nero fiddling, while the country is aburning! Compare the old time Mining Laws of 1872 To our U. S. Constitution and hear those words ring true. i You know that both are basics for the way we want to live, fl But you've changed them by amendments so they both leak like a seive. fs Is there no one who will listen or can't you understand? j You're playing with our freedoms and the greatness of this land! sty'-fs.
