Show r,RUsTRML F3I1DAT10N STARTS 'OPERATION BOOTSTRAP' IN EFFORT TO BUILD MILFORD INDUSTRY A joint meeting of the Milford Industrial Foundation board of directors, v.e r.hers, membership comrrit e?, local civic cranizatio-s, enerl public and hih school students stu-dents was held Wednesday evening in the High School nd'torium. Purpose of the meeting was to launch Mil-ford's Mil-ford's "Operation Bootstrap," theme of the Foundation's membership drive. Mrs. Gladys Whittaker, membership mem-bership committee chairman, conducted the meeting. Alva J. Kirk, president, gave a summary sum-mary of accomplishments of the Foundation up to this time. Russel Mayer, vice president, told of the reasons the A. T. & T. Building is needed as an industrial site for Milford. He also mentioned the many uses to which the building could ba put, and officiated at a question ques-tion and answer session, answering an-swering all questions put to him. Gene Mayer, Milford City Mayor, pledged support of the City Council and offered any possible assistance to the Foundation's Foun-dation's programs. Mrs. Whittaker invited comments com-ments on benefits to be gained from industry moving into Milford, Mil-ford, and responses were: increased in-creased enrollment in our schools, increased teacher demand, de-mand, broadened tax base, larger larg-er curriculum of sichool subjects sub-jects offered. Mayor Mayer suggested that vocational courses should be offered in our high school to train students in the skills most needed by industries, and pointed out that through industrial in-dustrial development our economy econ-omy would be boosted, our vacant va-cant buildings occupied, which would lead to further employment, employ-ment, involve a force of construction con-struction laborers to build needed new homes, and, most important, provide opportunity for employment of our young people so they would not be forced to leave Milford to seek employment. Mrs. Whittaker also told of plans to have the Senior Class students conduct a house to house survey seeking public opinion on the Foundation' efforts, ef-forts, and ideas for greater effort. ef-fort. It was pointed out that in order io submit a firm bid for the AT&T building, memberships member-ships in the Foundation must be obtained. Sustaining membership mem-bership fee is $50, payable at once or at $10 a month over a five-month period. Prospective members may contact Mrs. Whittaker or Mr. Kirk. |
