Show ! NOW IS TIME TO KILL DANDELIONS Early fall is an excellent time to control dandelions in lawns, according to Louis A. Jensen, Utah State University extension entomologist. He said, "Even i your lawn was 'weed free' earlier this summer, there is a strong possibility that weed seeds have been carried in by wind, water or by other means. These seeds germinate and show up as small plants." Dandelions, he noted, are perennial per-ennial weeds most bothersome to lawn keeperes. If they ar allowed to live over the winter, they will develop deep tap roots large leaves and bright,, yj.low blossoms to mark the awns next spring. Spraying lawns this fall will prevent dandelion development and also will rid the law;:s o o.hcr undesirable broad-leafed weeds, Mr. Jensen said. He gives the following pointers to remember in order to obtain best results when spraying for dandelions: (1) Allcw the lawn to grow a few days after mowing mow-ing and water thoroughly the day before spraying; (2) Use 2, 4-D or mixtures containing 2, 4-D, remembering that the amine salt type is safer to use around the home; (3) Mix the chemical according to directions on the container; (4) Spray when the wind isn't' blowing to avoid damage to trees, flowers flow-ers and other ornamentals; and (5) Delay sprinkling or mowing mow-ing for a couple of days after spraying. "By following these instructions," instruc-tions," Mr. Jensen said, "you should obtain excellent control of dandelions in your lawn.'" |
