Show DOLPHINS TALK OVER LONG DISTANCE PHONES The Telephone Company is providing many different services serv-ices nowadays, with automatic dialers, tele-lecture, banking by phone, data-phone, picture-phone, picture-phone, etq. But another new service, unique to say the least ,was provided recently ... a porpoise-to-porpoise long distance telephone call, according to Gerald Vickers, local manager for Mountain States, which combined communications technology tech-nology with marine biology. Participants in the conversation conversa-tion were "Speedy," a trained porpoise at Marineland of the Pacific, and "Splash," his counterpart coun-terpart at Marineland of Florida. Flor-ida. The two porpoises squeaked, chirped and whistled to each other over the 2,500 miles of telephone lines that separated them. Each listened intently to the other, with only occasional interruptions. "A porpoise is a mammal," Mr. Vickers said, "so you can't accuse me of telling a fish story.'' |
