Show OL' DIZ PLANTS TREES Dizzy Dean, better known for his baseball pitching and broadcasting, has joined the tanks of those who manage timber as a continuous crop. Ol' Diz had a colorful career as a major league hurler, then turned to broadcasting where he immortalized the song "Wabash "Wa-bash Cannonball" and such malapropisms as "he slud into third." Now he has many interests including that of being a certified certi-fied tree farmer in Mississippi. In typical Dean fashion, he said, "I am far more familiar with growin' cotton than I am a-growin' a pine tree." But he figures the Mississippi Forestry For-estry Commission and the Mississippi Mis-sissippi Forestry Association can give him the necessary (teaching. Dean owns one of the nation's na-tion's 31,317 tree farms which encompass 70,193,120 acres of forest land. |
