Show WHO GETS THE CAKE ? We think someone oughta send our good friends over in Beaver a crying towel, large size. In last week's Beaver Press our friend George Rich used his editor's column to refer to Standard Oil and Deseret Investors Group as heartless corporations and opines that if the big companies had tried to find some way to get the traveling public and truckers to leave the freeway at Beaver to purchase gas and other necessities, instead of planning a highway service area at Cove Fort, they'd be making friends of the Beaver people instead of creating creat-ing animosities and ill will. We think George must have had his tongue in his cheek when he wrote that, and maybe it was written to fchow.t.he Beaver merchants he was on their side. Anytime anyone tries to get in the way of progress, they're gonna get run over by a steam roller, and halt progress is just what Beaver seems endeavoring to do . . . just because there may not be a highway service center cen-ter at Cove Fort (if Beaver wins the lawsuit) they ain't gonna lure fast-driving motorists off a 70-mile-an-hour freeway to do their stopping and shopping in Beaver, when it's only another 40 minutes to Cedar, where they are offered many more and much more varied inducements induce-ments for their tourist dollar. Modern motorists don't want to, and ain't gonna, leave that wide, wide pavement to buy gas or a meal or spend the night unless it's absolutely abso-lutely necessary. - Anyway, Attorney Sam Cline feels that Beaver will win the suit, then he really expects the Utah Supreme Court to rule in favor of Beaver, since previously they have so ruled in similar cases. Some Beaver County Commissioners take the position posi-tion that they can't see the sense in taking a million dollar valuation out of Beaver City and transferring it 25 miles north. We'd like to point out that valuation in Beaver . City is going to definitely drop and drop fast and heavy whsn Interstate IS bypasses the city. Proof of that is seeing what has happened to every other tourist community that has been by-passed. The County would be much better off to get that million dollar investment at Cove Fort, IN BEAVER COUNTY, rather than have it go over the line into Millard County, and then sit back while Millard County eats the cake. Progress is vital, and it ain't gonna be stopped. The Beaver area business men, instead of going all out to stall progress, might do better to devote their talents to developing their wonderful resources in Beaver Canyon; Can-yon; to lure tourists for a week end or visitors to spend the summer in the area, rather than trying to make them get off the freeway to spend a couple of bucks for gas) or groceries. It is contended that the zoning ordinance as it now stands is designed to protect the Beaver City gas and oil and restaurant and tourist court businesses against competition. com-petition. The zoning ordinance provides for establishment establish-ment of highway service areas . . . but there have been no highway service areas established. Judge Day has taken the case under advisement, and will hand down his decision soon. It will be interesting inter-esting to see how he rules, and no matter how he rules, the case is certain to be appealed to the Utah Supreme Court. A lot of West Beaver County residents will be watching with interest for the decisions. |
