Show GRASS ROOTS DAY Monday, May 23, Democrat and Republican precinct mass meetings will be held in Utah. These mass meetings meet-ings are the most important phase of our American political polit-ical system . . . they are the "grass roots" . . . the place where our democratic system of government starts. At the mass meetings precinct officers are selected, but more important, delegates to the county conventions are named. These county convention delegates weigh the abilities of the county and state candidates and when more than two have filed for an office, they eliminate all but two. They also elect delegates to the state conventions, I and when it's "patronage time," they make recommendations recommenda-tions for appointment to various road and other county jobs. Each and every year but this year particularly it is important that the mass meetings be attended by all the voters in the precincts. For scores of years Beaver County has had a "gentleman's agreement" under which one county commissioner was elected from each of the three major municipalities of the county... This year, for reasons known only to the Republicans and Democrats of Beaver, they have chosen to abrogate the agreement and have filed a candidate, representing both parties, against the Minersville candidates. It is reported that a Beaver precinct chairman boasted "We're going to get that commission com-mission seat out of Minersville." j We dont think they will . . . but they can, unless the delegates to the county conventions, to be named at the mass meetings next Monday evening, are sincere "West END'' Democrats and Republicans who will stick together to defeat the announced Beaver purpose. We think the Minersville commission seat should remain in Minersville, Miners-ville, and we think the Milford delegates to the county conventions should represent all the voters of their precincts. pre-cincts. Only if all the voters attend the mass meetings and express their views, discuss the nominees for delegate, dele-gate, and vote their convictions, can we have true representation repre-sentation from the "grass roots." Republican mass meetings will be held at 7 :30 p. m., Monday, May 23, at the following places: Precinct No. 1 Mitchell White home, Precinct No. 2 Milford High School. Precinct No. 3 South Milford Clubhouse. Democrat mass meetings, at 8 p. m. at Precinct No. 1 Milford Library. Precinct No. 2 Elementary School. Precinct No. 3 Baptist Church. Plan to attend these meetings. Voters who do not attend the precinct meetings are usually the ones who do the most griping about the candidates, the elected officials, offi-cials, and the operation of our county government. Be a DOER instead of a Griper. j |
