"Once again American service serv-ice men are fighting and dying on foreign soil for the cause of freedom," said Mrs. Dora Smithson, president of the VFW Auxiliary- "Another generation gen-eration of veterans and their dependents will need help in adjusting to new circumstances. "The war in Viet Nam is creating a new generation of veterans who will need the re-habilition re-habilition help of veterans organizations or-ganizations and auxiliaries. "This years poppy sale is a vital key to just how much help will be availabls for those returning veterans and their families. The poppy sale is ;he primary means by which the Auxiliary and the VFW raise funds to assist these veterans vet-erans and their families." Mrs. Alice Baxter, Poppy chairman for the American Legion Le-gion Auxiliary, pointed out: "More than 50 years ago on another May evening when American and other allied nations na-tions were engaged in the First World War,, an enemy offen-' offen-' sive was stopped, turned back by a massive wall of Allied resistance. re-sistance. Then American forces advanced over the battlefields, driving the enemy before them, but a terrible price was paid with the lives of the fighting men who fell on the poppy-covered fields of France and Flanders. When the comrades com-rades of these fallen heroes returned re-turned home, the poppy was remembered re-membered as the symbol of sacrifice these men had been called upon to make. This feeling feel-ing on the part of the returning return-ing veterans established the national na-tional custom of wearing a Memorial Me-morial Poppy in honor of the men who did not return. "This year, again, ladies -of The Auxiliaries will be offering offer-ing poppies to citizens of the community, and your purchases will help the Auxiliary in their programs of assistance to disabled dis-abled veterans, and widows and children of veterans. Buy a Poppy, Saturday, May 21 and Wear It Proudly!" |
