Milford Ping Pong Tourney Progressing On Schedule ' Milford's Second Annual Ping Pong Tcurney is progressing progres-sing as planned according to organizer, Clark Dalton. Play is conducted every evening after aft-er school for two to three hours starting at approximately 5:3C p.m. Tables are available at the St. Bridget's Recreation hall and are always under the supervision sup-ervision of adults, he said. On Saturday's the hall is opened fcr the afternoon and again in the evening. Eighty persons are signed up in the three divisions, with If vying in the adult division, 32 in the High School Division and 32 in the 12 and under division. The ladies made their first inroads into the tournament this year, making up a fair percentage per-centage of the contestants in the two lower divisions. The adult division is still strictly a male dominated bunch. Milford Mil-ford evidently is short on women's wom-en's libbers. Only two complete matches of the double elimination tourney tour-ney are completed, though some brackets are playing ahead and in several instances, some of those entering the championship bracket are already al-ready decided, but final games will determine the seeding. In each division, eight contestants will survive the preliminary brackets and go into the championship cham-pionship which separates the men from the boys, figuratively speaking. Plans now call for the first round of the championship to be played at the Rec Hall on a catch as catch can basis with the final matches of each championship bracket probably in the MHS gym in public. Several names from the winners win-ners of last year's tourney still are prominent among those left in the running. Steve Wilson who placed third last year is the man to beat in the 12 and under. But he is being challenged chal-lenged by several strong contenders con-tenders in Fenton Thompson and Ken Jones. Doug Mayer who placed first in the 14 and wider last year looks like the man to beat, but since this is probably the most improved bunch in the High School Division, it will be a fight to the finish with Brian Edwards, Mark Nelson among names to watch. Clark Dalton, winner of the adult division last year, looks like he might repeat, but several sev-eral others remember when he was tile underdog to the big Swede last year and pulled of! a big upset. Look for Evan Lister, Darrel Cox, Wayne Hardy, Tommy Yee and Russel Mayer to someone else to come up with the game to knock him off of the top spot. Any of the contestants making the championship cham-pionship bracket will have a fresh start. On a given day they can all be beat. Sponsors of the tournament are Ron's Chevron Service, The Beaver County News, Marion Walker, SMR. Ca-oers, B & J Club, Flying M Ranch, Lazy J Ranch, Lee's Corner Drug and The Milford City Youth Committee. Com-mittee. Trophies will be awarded award-ed to the first three places and consolation in each division. |
