Show At last! We finally got a new shipment of newsprint this week and we believe you will see the difference in the picture reproduction this week. We still have quite a bit of the other on hand, but plan to try to use it where there are either no pictures or else make confetti con-fetti out of it. It was real frustrating to spend hours and dollars shooting and processing pictures of the local citizens and events, only to be unable to reproduce them so that they were identifiable. Hope that is all past us and that the newsprint shortage short-age will soon be relieved. o Didn't take long to knock the ol' redhead out of the Ping Pong Tournament this year. First Darrel Cox lowered the boom and then Russel Mayer formed a one man gang to win two games straight. Lcrks as if we'll have to look to Steve again this year if the Wilson's are to gather any laurels. The tournament is progressing progress-ing very well and the eighty participants are slowly being whittled to eight in each division. divi-sion. Those eight will make up the championship 'bracket for each division and will be eligible for trophies and prizes according to their division and final finish. The public hearing with the Beaver County School Board Tuesday evening proved to be quite fruitless, insofar as advancing ad-vancing the knowledge of local participants on the need for another an-other bond election for $365,000. The reason it was fruitless, is because the board was unable to answer the overriding question ques-tion of why $365,000 was needed. need-ed. They couldn't tell us that they couldn't build two Very adequate gyms for the previously previous-ly passed $700,000 in bonds. o Emotional pleas were made by three of the MHS coaches to provide the best of facilities, and not cheapen the igyms by failing to pass the bond issue. Unfortunately they are all far to young to have had much experience ex-perience with public building, bend issues or that other dirty business of paying for them with property taxes. They are not to be blamed for their exhuberance in wanting want-ing all they can get to work with, and all that they can get us to pay for. As one of them stated to this writer in the past week "I couldn't care less if there are any seats at all, so long as we have an adequate place to play ball." Actually, the only plausible reasons given for the additional $365,000 bond election was to bond the district to the very maximum thereby creating a possibility that some state money might be available. This of course is a presumption and not a fact, and is a poor excuse for paying off $365,000 in bonds. The other reason presented was the need for the huge gym in Beaver to host a possible Region 8 Round Robin every 5 to 10 years at best. o This writer asked that the Supt. be restrained from making mak-ing statements concerning the possibility of a tournament in Beaver at some future date, unless un-less he was prepared to provide pro-vide some sort of documentation documenta-tion to prove his statements. He replied that he had corrected his erronous statements to the News several times in past weeks, which was denied by this writer, since our only contact con-tact since February when he first made these statements was a phone call requesting permission per-mission to submit news copy after our deadlines, and last Thursday, March 29, when he parked in front of our office and sent Ivan Rowley in the office for a couple of papers. He also teld of a copy of Region 8 minutes which he had given to board members, verifying the tourney. At this point we brought out copies of Region eight minutes pointing out the format used over the past two years (which we have cn file) and stating that the sheet he had referred to did not follow this format at all, making it diffcult for us to believe that what he had given the board as evidence of his statements, was suspect. These documents are on file at the Continued on Back Page port it without expressing our own op'nions so therefore you find it in the opinion column. col-umn. Anyone who sees the situation sit-uation in a different light will be granted space in the .next issue. HERE'S MORE ABOUT JUST BETWEEN (Continued from Page Onel News rffict, if anyone cares to make his own determination. o The overriding factor in this bond election is that to date, the B?ard is unable to tell us that they cannot build adequate gyms for the $700,000 already voted. At best the $365,000 will buy only a bunch of empty seals, seats which will likely remain empty forever. Certainly Certain-ly they don't even have any accurate estimates of how many seats they will have in these gyms. Some estimates go as high as 3500. 1200 seats will be more than adequate to hold all of the ball fans in Beaver County, and that is the size that will be most probable for use. o Certainly the School Board will spend all the taxpayers give them We believe that $700,000 is enough.
