(Reprinted from "RushirT Roulette" by Travelers) Thanks to continued campaigns by safety organizations, organiza-tions, the use of safety belts increased substantially during dur-ing 1962, as two important trends developed to testify to their growing acceptance by the motoring public. At the beginning of 1962, only one state Wisconsin Wiscon-sin required that safety belts be installed on all new cars. By the end of the year, however, ten states had introduced such legislation. "Used So worry before I got the safety faeits." ; In the private sphere, several sev-eral national auto fleet operators oper-ators have ordered their cars equipped with safety belts, and many of these have arranged as well to have safety belts made available to their employees em-ployees -for their personal cars under special distribution programs pro-grams It is generally accepted that safety belts contribute to motoring mo-toring safety for two basic reasons: 1. You are safer inside th-; car than If thrown out of it. A body catapulted out of a car runs greatly increased hazards not only from being smashed . directly onto the street or other object, but also from the danger of being hit by oncoming traffic. Furthermore, Further-more, the car usually acts as protective armor for objects inside it in taking the initial shock of collision with another object. This absorption of the initial shock often marks the difference between life and death, or between minor ,and serious injury. 2. You are less likely to be dashed against the interior of your own car. Without a safety safe-ty belt to hold you in place, your body acts like any loose object that can fly around inside in-side the car. The safety belt thus reduces the likelihood of smashing yourself against , the windshield, or onto the steering steer-ing column or other protruding protrud-ing objects inside the car. In the light of these important import-ant considerations, the slight annoyance of having to fasten safety belts seems a minor price to pay for the increased safety you get., Don't play Rushin' Roulette with your life or the lives of your passengers.
