In order to be protected against polio, an individual must be protected against all three types. There are separate oral vaccines against all three types. WHAT IS THE ORAL VACCINE? It is a live virus vaccine which helps the body develop Immunity. Im-munity. Unlike many other vaccines, it can be taken by mouth. HOW DOES THE SABIN ORAL VACCINE DIFFER FROM THE SALK VACCINE? The Salk vaccine is a killed virus vaccine. Although the three types are combined into one vaccine, four shots are given over a period of 9 to 15 months. With Sabin oral vaccine, each type is given separately by mouth, usually six weeks apart. The vaccine works fast, usually within a week. HOW EXTENSIVELY HAS THE SABIN ORAL VACCINE BEEN USED? The Sabin vaccine has been given to more than 300 million people throughout the world with satisfactory results. Many millions of doses have been given in the United States. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE SABIN ORAL VACCINE? The oral vaccine acts to produce an Intestinal barrier against poliovllis, as well as antibodies in the bloodstream. Thus the vaccine will help prevent vaccinated persons from carrying the disease as well as help protect them against poliovirus. SHOULD YOU HAVE ORAL VACCINE IF YOU HAVE HAD SALK VACCINE? Yes, it is wise to take the oral vaccine. It will Increase your protection and help you protect other persons In the community. HOW IS IT GIVEN? It can be given to infants by dropper. Older children and adults can either drink the vaccine or eat a cube of sugar on which the vaccine has been dropped. WHO MAY TAKE THE ORAL VACCINE? The vaccine may be given to persons six weeks of age or older. Old people as well as youngsters ihould take It. WHERE WILL IT BE GIVEN? TYPE I VACCINE: IN THE MILFORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL BUILDING, FROM 2 TO 4 P. M. SATURDAY AND FROM 10 A. M. TO 2 P. M. SUNDAY; IN THE MINERSVILLE LDS CHURCH FROM 3 TO 5 P. M. SUNDAY TYPE II AND TYPE III VACCINE, DURING APRIL AND MAY, TIMES AND DATES TO BE ANNOUNCED HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? Persons will be asked to donate 25c per dose (more If they wirh) to offset the cost of the vaccine. However, no person will be denied the vaccine because of Inability to pay. HOW MAY THE PUELIC HELP? First, every person should make sure that he and his family fam-ily obtain the vaccine at the public clinics. Second, every person should urge friends and acquaintances to get the I vaccine. |
