Show Snake Valley News . . . Fires Plague Baker-Garrison Area; Deardens, Howard Baker Have Loss By Mrs. M. F. Hesselgesser Two disastrous fires struck the Baker-Garrison area this week, causing damage in excess ex-cess of $100,000. The Howard Baker garage at Baker, Nev., was destroyed, and at Garrison the same day Monday, April 23, wind-whipped flames consumed the corrals cor-rals and outbiuldings of Vivian and Lee Dearden. Lost in the Baker fire were the garage building and machine ma-chine shops, a quantity of tools, several motors, paint, a 52,000 light plant, batteries, refrigerators and other equipment. equip-ment. Volunteer fire fighters from the area saved other buildings At Garrison, the fire starting on Monday was still burning and smouldering Tuesday. The loss included all the new Dearden Dear-den corrals, feed yard, hay. grain, and the entire farmstead except the homes. Several calves died in the blaze, but most cattle were saved. All farm equipment and machinery except tractors was burned, and estimated loss is "at least $100,000." The Delta fire department sent a pumper to the scene and the Ely Forest Service and Fire Department responded. A call was made to Milford, but the Milford truck was not in mechanical shape to make the 90-mile run. Volunteers from Milford responded. Harvey Young of Ely, formerly for-merly of Garrison, is credited with "rounding up" the equip ment and volunteers from Ely. Mrs. Lee is the daughter of Mrs. Howard Baker. 9 Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cook of Salt Lake, owners of the Stardust Star-dust building rock quarry at Henry Creek, spent a few hours in Baker Sunday attending attend-ing to business. Martin Baker of the State Line Club and B. B. Hesselgesser Hessel-gesser of Mt. Wheeler Inn at Sacramento Pass, and Howard Baker of Baker are moving the old log lodge building from Lehman Caves to State Line. The lodge is being moved to make room for a large entrance and lobby to be erected by the National Park Service.
