Show Former Presidents On National Legion 'Bells Across Nation' Group A group of distinguished Americans, Am-ericans, including former Presidents Pres-idents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Herbert Hoover, have accepted ac-cepted appointments to serve on the "Bells Across the Nation" Na-tion" committee, National Commander Com-mander Charles L. Bacon of The American Legion has announced. an-nounced. , Earlier, Adm. Ar-leigh Ar-leigh A. Burke, USN (Ret.), accepted an appointment as the chairman of the committee. "Bells Across the Nation" will ring out a message of American unity and love of liberty on Patriots' Day, April 19, in a nationwide demonstration demonstra-tion of America's devotion to freedom. Other prominent Americans who have accepted appointments appoint-ments to the committee are: Robert S. McNamara, secretary secret-ary of defense; Sen. Margaret Chase Smith (R-Me.) ; John C. Safeterfield, president of the American Bar Association; Francis Cardinal Spellman, archbishop of New York ;Ew-ald ;Ew-ald Turner, president of the' National Education Assocation; Joyce C. Hall, president of Hallmark Cards; Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre, Jr., dean of Washington Cathedral; and Rabbi Robert I. Kahn, past national chaplain of The American Amer-ican Legion. "The American Legion is deeply grateful to these fine, patriotic Americans for taking time out from their own busy schedules to help promote this demonstration of our national unity of purpose," Bacon said. Commander Bacon noted that the "Bells Across the Nation" program is not a new call to arms, but rather a massive voluntary demonstration that America is armed armed in unity, in spirit, and in deep moral conviction. ' 3 In addition to the national committee to provide leadership leader-ship for the program, Commander Com-mander Bacon has asked the commanders of The American Legion's nearly 17,000 posts to serve as his local representatives representa-tives to the committee and to coordinate the project in their respective communities. |
