Show Elementary P.-T. A. Hears Candidates for Board of Education Milford's Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association, after hearing routine reports at their regular meeting Wednesday evening, eve-ning, heard candidates for positions posi-tions on the Beaver County Board of Education discuss their qualifications. quali-fications. Candidates are Norman Lamb, Richard Leon Jones and Steve Williams, from District 1 (west portion of town) and W. R. Davis, at present unopposed, from Dist. 2 (East side of Main Street and South Milford). Dr. D. A. Symond, retiring board member, discussed the duties du-ties of boards of education and individual members, as a preface to talks by the candidates. Mrs. Loretta Cline, candidate for the State Board of Education Educa-tion from District 5, which includes in-cludes Juab, Millard, Beaver, Iron and Washington Counties, discussed State Board of Education Educa-tion laws, duties and procedure, and reviewed her many years of school and other civic interests and work. Following her talk, P.-T. A. President Bob Wright suggested that members of the group contact friends and relatives rela-tives in other counties in behalf of Mrs. Cline's candidacy. Norman Lamb addressed the group, listing his 10 or more years of work for and with the schools and children of the community, com-munity, and stated that our children chil-dren should have as good an education edu-cation as teachers and parents can provide. He also stressed that school board problems are also problems of P.-T. A. organizations organ-izations and other citizens. Richard Leon Jones, after stating stat-ing that in yielding to urgings that he be a candidate for the Board of Education he was "torn between his desire to serve the people of the county and his inclination in-clination to continue as a private citizen without assuming additional addi-tional duties" promised to be sincere sin-cere and fair in all school board actions. W. R. Davis expressed the opinion that his many years' experience ex-perience in dealing with people and with knotty problems, his I ability to recognize the difference between the possible and the impossible, im-possible, the legal and the illegal, ille-gal, the wholesome and the unwholesome, un-wholesome, would be of great value to him and to the county if he were elected to the Board of Education. Steve Williams listed his 15 years' active interest in children and schools, his work on community, com-munity, district and state level in American Legion child welfare and school programs, and his training, as a newspaper publisher, pub-lisher, in appraising both sides of a situation and reaching an impartial and fair conclusion. Principal Arnoldson spoke on various problems of education, the purpose and need of better education, and new methods now being used in education. Committee reports included a discussion by Mrs. Joan Holland on the objectives of the P.-T. A., a membership report and announcement an-nouncement of . the annual membership mem-bership drive. The drive, scheduled for next Tuesday, may be postponed a week if the children are taking tests on that day. Mr. Wright pointed out that all activties of the P.-T. A. are financed by funds derived from membership, and that there is no other source of revenue for P.-T. P.-T. A. activities. Dixie Lamb discussed progress prog-ress of the school ground beau-tification beau-tification program and advised that completion of the project is partially stymied because of lack of water for irrigation of shrubs and lawn. A Halloween program for children chil-dren of the school was discussed and present indications are that the P.-T. A. will sponsor a Halloween Hal-loween party including a special program, "spook" film, concessions, conces-sions, and a possible UNICEF collection in place of the usual Trick or Treat. Definite announcement an-nouncement of this program will be made later. Accidents don't "Just Happen" . . , they are CAUSED!! |
