Show BEAVER LIONS READY FOR BIGGEST RACE MEET IN HISTORY; 26 HORSES NOMINATED FOR SATURDAY DERBY At noon Wednesday 26 speedsters had been nominated for the 18th running of the Dairy District Derby, feature event of the annual Beaver Race Meet. The Derby will be run Saturday, closing day of the three-day meet. This year it will be the "Run for the Posies," with the Farrer Floral Shop of Beaver fashioning a floral horseshoe to drape around the neck of the winning horse. An outstanding card of seven sev-en races will be featured each day, starting Thursday, according ac-cording to Rex Packard, general gen-eral racing chairman, and with the new starting gate being be-ing used this year for the first time, Mr. Packard said, nine horses can start in each race. "The Derby can very well be the richest race in Utah," Mr. Packard said. "With the 26 nominations, and the added money offered by the race committee, all added to the entry fees, we hope to have a $1,000 purse for this race." Included among the 26 horses nominated for the annual an-nual feature are some of the fastest horses in the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain area. Rex Carter, entertainment chairman, announced that feature fea-ture acts had been arranged for each day, including a change-saddle horse race for Friday, and possibly a kid pony jace for one or two days. Thursday's specialty acts include in-clude performances by David Williams, Minersville vocalist; vocal-ist; Barlocher and his Western West-ern Band from Milford, featuring fea-turing Barlocher's steel guitar, guit-ar, and another specialty act- The Beaver Riding Club will perform each day, presenting pre-senting the National Colors as they lead the Grand Entry before the races start. They will also perform several drills between races. Post' time for the first race each day is 2:30 p. m. Programs Pro-grams will be on sale Thursday Thurs-day during the Pioneer Day parade ; Thursday evening for Friday's races about 6 p. m. ; and about 6 p. m. Friday for the Saturday races. Five lovely young ladies from Beaver have entered the Race Meet Queen competition and will be presented in front of the grandstand each day. Contestants are: Janet Hofheins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Hofheins; Hof-heins; Edith Yardley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Yardley ; Kay Lee Fillmore, daughter daugh-ter of Sheriff and Mrs. Lee R. Fillmore; Julie Ann Farrer, daughter daugh-ter of Mr. and Mrs. Wells Farrer; Dian Riley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Riley. Age limit for contestants, originally set at 18, was dropped drop-ped to 16 in order for more girls to enter. |
