Show "I REMEMBER" BY THS OLD TIMERS From William Bommervllle, Parsons, Par-sons, W. Va.: I remember when I was a boy I used to go to the country coun-try store with my mother and buy Arbuckles Coffee for 10c per pound and granulated sugar for sc ana tne Den oi siao oacon ior 6c pef pound. These kitchen necessities neces-sities were usually exchanged for chickens, eggs and butter and very little money was used. The wages at the time were 60c per day of ten hours or more. The winters were longer and very severe with deep snows and large drifts which took up Into the spring months to melt away. Sometimes In early May. I also remember the old up snd down saw mill located on a small creek near my father's farm which was run by water power, tho even at that tima it was obsolete and . ' not in us. The grist mill was also very common com-mon at that time. They were run by water power supplied by a dam built in the main creek. I used to carry many a grist of corn to the mill on my back when the horse had other work to do in the fields. The most used firearms at that time was the muzzle loading rifle, a few muzzle loading shotguns were in use. The principal way of preserving pre-serving many kinds of fruits was by drying on a roof in the sun or stringing on twine strings and hanging them behind the stoves to dry. When dry. they were usually placed in empty flour bags and hung up on nails tor winter use. (ten. contributions t thli aoiumn It Th 014 Timer, Community Pro Strr. let, B.i Vi, Franklart, Kj.j - |
