LAFF OF THE WEEK . , Check the oil? . . . test the battery? . . . clean the windshield? . . . take you to lunch?" PaiueCairmme HELENE DU GUAY, 5 Tudor City Place, New York, New York, says without warning, her mother had to have her eye re-moved, her mother accepted it bravely, but Helene did not. While her mother was in the hospital Helene tried to make her visits gay, but her heart was heavy and she dreaded the day they would remove the bandage. The day her mother was dismissed from the hos-pital she went with her to get an artificial eye. Cowardly, Helene sat In an adjoining room while her mother was being fitted. Soon the doctor called her in. There was her brave little mother looking anxiously towards her to see her reaction! Hold-ing back her tears, she said, "You look marvelous Mother!" "The eye will have . to be bathed every four hours," said the doctor. "You, Helene, will have to take the artificial eye out for the first few days!" CARNEGIE Helene froie. but she could not hurt her mother. The doctor, sensing her fear, said, "Here. Take it out now! Cold wa-ter seemed to be pouring down her back and silently she cried: "Dear God. give me courage; don't let Mother know how frightened I am!" Then she took the eye out and put it back in and she Conquered Fear! By LYN CONNELLY Vf AESTRO Lawrence Welk, an 11 accordion virtuoso, chuckles when he tells how he insisted on adding another accordionist to his band, Myron F'loren, now a. veteran "Champion Music" maker . . . Everybody associated with the top man of the Welk show said It would be a great mistake, but being stubborn, ha hired the man any-way . . "One of my ballroom bosses said to me," Larry says now laughingly, " 'People tell ma this accordion player you hired Is a better musician than you are.' And he replied, "That's the only kind of musicians I hire'l" Peter Llnd Hayea was a refresh-ing emcee on the' Godfrey show recently when the redhead took a vacation . . For a long while (at least as long as the last time Peter took over) there was no sarcasm, no irritability and hallejujah no talk about horses and airplanes . We love them both but not to the extent that an hour of "enter-tainment" should be devoted to them every day. YOUR TOWN If you want to live in the kind of a town Like the kind of a town you like, You need not slip your clothes in a grip And go for a long, .long hike. For you'd only find w-h- you'd left behind; There is nothing that's really new. It's a knock at yourself when you knock your town; It isn't the town; it's you. Real towns are not made by men afraid Lest somebody else gets ahead; For if everyone works and no-body shirks, You can raise a town from the dead. And if when you make your per-sonal stake, Your neighbor can make one too, You can make a town what you want it to ibe; It isn't the town it's you. This little poem, whose author is unknown, was sent to the Bulletin by one of its subscribers who had seen it in the "Sheffield (Pennsylvania) Observer." Read-ers may find in it a familiar ring. They nave seen it before, per-haps, or, at least, something writh much the same sentiment. Nevertheless, they may, just as the editor did, find in it a re-newal of faith in every citizen's ability to do something for his town. It may give new zest to the desire of everyone to give his town the best service he can, so that instead of standing back while the rest of the world goes by it will join in the parade for-ward. Holding one's place while standing still is impossible. As other towns grow and advance in various ways, standing still merely means being left farther and fartner behind. If a town does not move forward, the re-sult is the same as if it made a definite attempt to sink back-ward. However, as the versifier says, "You can make a town what you want it to be; . Jt isn't tfcs town it'g you." |
