Show BALL TRYOUTS AT PROVO SOON Provo has been selected as a site for one of the St. Louis Cardinals' Car-dinals' nation-wide tryout camps. Red Bird talent scouts Ken Pen-ner Pen-ner and Tony Governor will be on the lookout there for future baseball greats on July 12, 13 and 14 it was announced by Chief Scout Joe Mathes. "I'll be looking forward to the camp with keen interest," Mathes pointed out. "It's a big opportunity opportu-nity for the talented players in the area. We don't expect them to be polished players but they must show definite promise. If they've got the tools we'll find a spot for them, develop their potential, and move them up to the big time as fast as their a-bility a-bility warrants." Sessions at Timp Baseball park will get underway each day at 10 a.m. A player must be be-tweeA be-tweeA 17 and 23 and bring his glove, baseball shoes, and a uniform uni-form if he has one. All other equipment will be furnished by the Cardinals. "We're equipped second to none to move young players up the baseball ladder," continued Mathes. "Operating clubs in every ev-ery class of organized ball, we have the places for our new discoveries, dis-coveries, and that's important these days of dwindling minor league operations, particularly in the lower classifications." 'Many fine players took their first step to baseball stardom by attending tryout camps, among them two sparkling stars of the 1956 Cardinals Vinegar Bend Mizell and Ken Boyer. Expenses incidental to attending attend-ing the camp will be refunded to each boy signed to a contract with one of the Cardinal-operated clulbs. To participate in try-outs try-outs an American Legion player must have letter of approval from either his Legion coach or Post commander. o |
