Show Rugby continued from page that WSU's two prior losses were blowouts to Brigham Young University and the University of Utah. "It's really good for the new guys to get a win, especially against a good team like Utah State," said rugby club member Brett Bingham. "The games against Utah State are usually grudge matches, so it was good for us to get a win in this kind of situation." The Wildcats believe the real key to victory this week was not in the fact that they were able to attain team chemistry between rookies and veterans, but that the coaching staff was able to prepare them adequately for the game on Saturday."Practicing was the difference this week," said Matt Winward, rugby club player and president. "The coaches really got after us this week in practice." Tafunai said his players needed to be better conditioned and more fundamentally sound to win. "We worked them very hard this week," he said. "Fitness is the key. The better shape you are in, the better you are going to play. We also focused a lot on basic skills this week." In Saturday's game, WSU's Luke Shuler scored the first WSU try. His score came after a long WSU drive. CD liV.lLiLltllLJ JO After several minutes in Aggie territory, WSU punched the ball in shortly after a scrum deep in Aggie territory. Shuler's score put WSU up 5-0. The game was delayed 20 minutes following Shuler's score because of an Aggie injury. WSU's Chris Schneider put a brutal hit on USU's Shane Olsen. Olsen broke his ankle as a result of the hit, and emergency personnel were called to take him to the hospital. The Aggies, inspired by the injury of their teammate, mounted an offensive threat briefly before the end of the half. USU spent the last few minutes of the half in WSU territory, but was not able score. The 'Cats went into the half with a 5-0 lead, but then took control in the second half. Matt Winward scored the first try of the second half to give WSU a 10-0 lead. Shuler added a point after kick to give WSU a 12-0 lead. The next WSU score came a short time later when J.J. Wall took a pass from Jason Conway and powered it past the goal line. The score gave the 'Cats a 17-0 lead. The 'Cats scored the final points of the game on a try by Doug Cook. The Aggies made one more legitimate attempt to score, but were held in check by the WSU defense."It's good to go into region play with a win," Bingham said. "This gives us a lot of confidence heading into our games with UVSC and Idaho State." WSU will face Utah Valley State College on Saturday in Provo. In the past two seasons, WSU and UVSC have split the season series. The 'Cats walked away as winners in the spring of last season while UVSC beat the 'Cats last fall. "It'll be a rough, rough game," Bingham said. "They have a lot of really good players on their team. John Wood, who used to play for us, is on their team, and he is an excellent player. They also have a lot of other guys on their team that are extremely tough." WSU will play UVSC Saturday in Provo at noon. The 'Cats will be looking for their second win of the season and their first region victory."If we beat UVSC and Idaho State, we can win our region, so we're excited for next week," Shuler said.
