WSU was founded as Weber Stake Academy in 1 889 by John Henry Weber and opened its first year with 100 students attending. This semester more than 18,000 students will be enrolled at WSU, either at the Ogden, Davis, West and Morgan campuses or through the online and independent study programs. WSU offered students its first oaccaiaureate degree in 1964 and since then has continued to provide professional, liberal arts and technical certificates as well as associate, bachelor's and master's degrees. Above: The North American lynx, or wildcat, greets students as they walk past the statue south of the Shepherd Union Building. The Wildcat became a symbol of WSU in the 1920s when a sports writer refered to a WSU team as "a scrappy bunch of wildcats." Right top: The Stewart Bell Tower, found in the David O. McKay Court, stands as a landmark for WSU. The tower was presented in 1971 by Donnell B. Stewart, class of 1926 and 1966, and Elizabeth S. Stewart, class of 1925. In 1990 the wall was remodeled to reflect the new university status. Left: During the beginning of the 2001 football season, the Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Stadium opened after construction that created a 37,000 square foot press box and skybox suite area and new bleachers. 3 |
