Show iesrsatenal ssiters allow uiti mm 7 w S By KIM HARRIS THACKER special assign, editor The Signpost For many students of higher education, a new semester is a prime time to set fresh goals. These may include getting good grades, saving money and enjoying increased recreational activity. The good news for students at Weber State University is that the Swenson Gymnasium and C. William Stromberg Center are also goal-oriented facilities. According to Judy Glommen, facility coordinator for the recreational center, safety and enjoyment of this facility is a paramount goal of the Health Promotions and Human Performance Department. .-. The Swenson Gym and C. William Stromberg Center form one large facility, comprised of many rooms. "It includes six basketball courts, swimming pool, indoor track, two exercise rooms, six classrooms, eight racquetball courts, and weight and fitness areas," Glommen said. "There are also three play fields and seven tennis courts outside the facility. The inside areas alone total over 130,000 square feet of usable space." The Swenson Gymnasium has been a familiar sight to students at WSU since 1962, ;r-- A VJ ' KS IX .-v,-.- , 14: J "Intramurals help students to develop meaningful relationships. We believe that as a result of participating in intramurals, it's goint to help students be involved not only in our programs, but, theoretically, in student life across campus' John Knight executive director of student life Leo Girace participates in a chest workout at the Swenson Gymnasium. The Swenson Gym and C. William Stromberg Center include inside workout areas withi n more than 130000 square feeL when the gym first opened, for students on campus, and Since the new addition in 1990, even more opportunities to enjoy recreation have been made available to students. Due to the influx in student population in recent years, however, the need for more room to recreate has become apparent. "There's only so much space ... so it gets very crowded, especially in the dead of winter," said John Knight, executive director of student life. "To alleviate some of that, we've developed satellite fitness opportunities others as well." These satellite programs include the Community Center in University Village and the newly opening fitness center in Promontory Tower. In addition to the newly developed satellite opportunities, even more expansion, involving renovations to the Swenson Gym, will occur in the near future. "The Swenson Gym will be closed down for the remodeling project, which will take probably 15 months," Knight said. This project will be effective after the spring semester of 2005. Glommen elaborated on what would be involved in the renovation. "It's my understanding that they're pretty much going to gut the building she said. "We're in desperate need of classrooms. ... With the renovation, they're going to add a lot more classrooms for us." In the meantime, however, the facility is up and running. There are many recreational activities available for patrons of the Swenson Gym and C.William Stromberg Center to enjoy. As described by Brian Lopez, student marketing coordinator of Campus Recreation, programs and classes available include the following: intramurals, club sports, aerobics, aquatics, the Wilderness Recreation Center and informal' .fitness opportunities. Regarding the benefits of on-campus recreation, Knight made an example of the intramural program. "Intramurals helps students to develop meaningful relationships," Knight said. "We believe that as a result of participating in intramurals, it's going to help students be involved not only in our programs, but, theoretically, in student life across campus."
