Show I he Signpost August 1. 2000 SUB Computet lahS working for students' convenience Orientation Issue Page 32 By James C. Berghout online editor The Signpost Notebook computers and wireless high-speed Internet connections will be coming to the Shepard Union Building's student computer lab this fall, according to Clayton Oyler, the lab's coordinator. In an effort to meet the changing needs of students, the area outside the lab will be outfitted with new furniture and wireless hubs connected to the school's network infrastructure. Students will be able to checkout notebook computers from the lab or connect with their own properly equipped computer. "This is a pilot program to see how well it works and how well it is received," Oyler said. If it works well, more hubs will be installed to accommodate more computers in other areas. Academic Support Services and Programs, the department that oversees such things as tutoring and testing is also responsible for managing and staffing 1 1 computer labs housing approximately 320 computers on and off campus. Carl Porter, ASSP executive director sees the students' computer needs moving in two important trends. For one. more students have there own computers. If they are using them on campus they will need a way of connecting to the Internet for research and email, thus we are experimenting with wireless networking. Porter said. In the second trend. Porter sees the need for 24-hour access to the school's computer labs. "Many students may not realize that we have a lab that is open until 1 a.m.." Porter said referring to the student union lab. Evidently, enough students know about it to make staying open worth while. It's not uncommon to have 10 people still using the lab at that time in the morning, Porter said. Staying open longer is not the only issue the labs must deal with. Working computers and aides that are willing help are other challenges. It is Academic Computing's duty to see that the S200.000 budget set aside this year from student fees is used wisely in buying and upgrading the hardware and software for these computer labs. "We have hit an important milestone with our computer labs on campus," Porter said. "We are upgrading the labs completely every three years." Half of the Shepard Union Building's computers were recently upgraded, replacing the older Pentium 133s with new Pentium III 667s. In addition, a new program is in place for training computer lab aide to provide better customer service, it's a great job, according to Oyler, It's the type of job he would have liked when he was in school. Help people and have time to study. "You don't have to be a computer science major to work as an aide." Oyler said. "In fact some of the best aides are people who just sincerely like to help." .
