Show August 1.2000 Orientation Issue TSW Mmm$ called parking The Siqnpost Pace 30 By Lisa Roskelley editor in chief 7he Signpost Parking. The horror stories. They are all true ... and bound to be worse this year. That's right. All the horror stories about parking at college that could only be urban legends may be made into fact by the end of this year. "It's going to be the toughest parking year we've ever seen," said Craige Hall, associate vice president for administrative services. While, granted, parking is always bad, especially at the beginning of fall semester, parking doesn't usually have the strains of construction as the campus does this year. The additional strain due to major construction closing parking lot A-10 and disrupting the normal flow of traffic and parking on campus will only heighten the frustration and difficulty of parking. Also, lots W-7 and W-8 will be closed right up to about the time fall semester starts, in order to join the two lots together, allowing more parking spaces, but are scheduled to open before the semester begins. A new 1 OO-stall lot is also being made below the Swensen Gym, A-8. 'That new lot, which doesn't accommodate a lot of cars, does provide some relief," Hall said. However, the university is working hard to make the transition from bad parking to worse parking as easy as possible. In addition to the five shuttle buses that run every five to seven 'It's going to be the toughest parking year we've ever seen." Craige Hall, associate vice president for administrative services minutes on campus, for the first several weeks at least two more buses will be added to the rotation, enabling shuttles to leave the Dee Events Center every three minutes. "The shuttle bus is a great service, an incredible service," said Dee Hansen, student body president. There is no decal required to park at the Dee, while to park on campus a "W," "R" or an "A" pass is required. "W" passes are $40 and one and a half passes are sold for every one parking stall available. "A" passes were $60 and only one pass was sold per stall, but they are sold out. "R" passes are only available to those living in the residential halls. Any cars found in lots without the appropriate decal will be ticketed with a $15 parking ticket. But an appealing alternative to a $40 decal, or $15 ticket is a free parking space at the Dee. There was talk about charging an annual $15 fee for parking at the Dee, however, the President's Council refused the idea saying the university "does that as a favor," since it is the only real backup according to Hall. "We have no place else to go," said Lee Cassity, chief of police. The shuttle bus route has undergone some changes since last year, also courtesy of the construction of the new Ethel Wattis Kimball Arts Center adjacent to the Val A. Browning Center. The shuttle makes a round from the Dee up Skyline Drive over to the WSU. The shuttle does not go on Harrison due to the unpredictability of traffic flow on the main street. The shuttle then makes seven stops on campus: on the east and north sides of Lind Lecture Hall, Marriott Allied Health Building, Swenson Gym. Dept. of Public Safety, in the W-7 and W-8 lots, and at the Social Science Building. These provide accessibilty all around campus. "Everybody is doing everything they can to make it work," Cassity said. Revised shuttle bus route due to construction 1. East side of Lind Lecture Hall 2. Marriott Allied Health Building 3. Swenson Gym 4. Dept. of Public Safety, across from Residential Halls 5. Parking lots W-7, W-8 and A-9 6. Social Sciene Building, across from LDS Institute 7.
