' It's the smart people that use the resources available on campus and get help when they are struggling," said Lynnae Dopp. coordinator for tutoring services. One indication of the level of interest Student Support Services lias in reaching students can be seen through the multiple programs, extending from the Davis campus to many locations within Weber State University which promote one on one tutoring or group study. Tutoring locations on campus include a learning center in basement of the Social Science Building, a learning center in the Science Lab Building, a Writing Center and drop in math lab in the Student Service Center, and a tutoring center also in the Student Service Center. "I think people become more confident." said Thomas Roybal, a tutor in mathematics. 'These people see a marked improvement."Students requesting a tutor simply give the times they are available and are given a tutor in their subject that is available at the same times. Roybal said that the interaction is one of the most important aspects of the tutoring process and often the people he meets with become his friends. They come up to me and say 'Look, 1 got a 90 percent on my test.'" Roybal said. "1 can see that I've had some impact." All tutors go through a training session to aid them in problem solving skills and in methods for the most effective means of Margarot Singleton, left, is being tutored in math by Dianna johnson in Room 260 in the Student Service Center. assisting people in learning. Roybal is working towards his master tutor certification which takes 30 hours of training and 75 hours of actual tutoring. Master tutors also have to create a project that will in some way benefit the other tutors. "At the top level you work yourself out of a job," Roybal said. 'They are doing so well they don't need you anymore." One of the problems Dopp sees in working with students is that they wait too long to come in after they get behind in a class. Dopp said that students should come in the first signs of struggle and not in the 1 1th or 12th week. Dopp added that there are great benefits for those that want to become tutors. Not only do tutors learn skills in communicating and listening but they also get to stay up on courses they tutor, get college credit from tutoring and are able to work in a rewarding job with flexible hours. "Everybody learns here," Dopp said. For students looking into graduate school, tutoring has the advantage of keeping the student current on many of the skills needed for graduate exams and also looks good on an entrance application. As an inevitable part ol the college experience, eventually a professor is going to test a students knowledge of a particular subject through the written word, whether it be though essays, reports, research papers or the like. As a free service to Weber State University students, the Writing Center offers resources in aiding the writing process on an individualized level and encourages WSU students to drop in with their current writing projects for useful feedback and positive peer interaction. After all, says Elisalyn Gardner, even the most brilliant writer can still have a typo. Gardner tutors for the writing center and has seen the improvement of the students she tutors firsthand. "Often students will work with the same person," Gardner said, pointing out that the schedules of the tutors are listed on a board in the writing center. An atmosphere of writing is also an important aspect of the Writing Center to Gardner. Writing guides and style manuals fill the tables in Room 261 of the Student Service Center, and computers used for revising papers and handling online submissions line the walls. Each has also been specially trained to be effective in tutoring all levels of writers in the different areas of writing compostion.- According to Ryan Decaria, a tutor in the Writing Center, these areas can range from sentence structure and grammar to more broad issues such as overall organization, revision or idea generation"We can help at any point, even if the paper isn't written yet," said Allison Palumbo, another Writing Center tutor. The Writing Center tutors emphasize that it is not their job to edit papers, but to help students become better writers.
