Show August 1. 2 Orientation Issue Health cam By Linda Loveland production manager The Signpost The Student Health Center, in the Student Service Center in Room 190, provides services for full- and part-time currently enrolled students and students' spouses who have a spouse card. The mission statement of the health center is to "provide in a caring, cost effective, convenient, professional manner, health care for the campus student body. Services provided reflect an effort to meet the health needs of the students, thereby facilitating their academic endeavors." Juliana Larsen, director of the health center for 15 years, said that the health center is "committed to providing quality care in a responsible way." As part of that commitment, student patients at the health center were surveyed at random last academic year. They also formed a Health Center Advisory Board, with students members, ensuring the best care for students is provided. The center has made changes resulting from the input received from these and other sources. Some of those changes include adding an extra hour to the time the health center is open (opening at 8 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.) and bringing in the services of a Nurse Practitioner who will be working six hours a day. These and other improvements will help decrease the waiting time for students and increase the level of care. The pharmacy, which is state inspected and licensed, is staffed by licensed pharmacists. They honor outside prescriptions if the on campus medicines are in stock. Pharmacists can also order prescriptions for students who will be needing them for a longer time. The pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Along with the laboratory services, the health center also has an X-ray machine available. The cost for X-ray services is $25 with no additional cost to have a radiologist read them. "We "feel that with these additions to our services, students will be able to continue receiving quality, affordable health care," Larsen said. 'These things serve to expand the availability of services." Basic services at the health center are free, but prescriptions, X-rays, or lab tests that are performed at the hospital must be paid for by the students. Students can obtain insurance through GM-Southwest, a student health insurance administrator. Questions regarding insurance can be directed to the Student Health Insurance office at the center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at ext. 6973 or after hours at1-877-334-4888. An insurance representative will be on campus Aug. 29 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for questions. An annual flu shot clinic, where students can receive free flu shots, is planned for October. "We appreciate their support and use of the service," Larsen said. "Since we are funded through student fees, patient satisfaction becomes very important to us, and we really do listen to their input and suggestions. That doesn't always mean we can do exactly what they request, but we do listen." e Signpost Paee 1 5 Career Services Center Find a full-time or part-time Job on or off campus Get help Selecting a career major Take a Career & Life Planning course (CHFAM 2900) Get help writing a Resume Talk to a Career Counselor Come see us in the Career Services Center Student Service Center, room 230 or call 626-6393 EDUCATION CAN BE FOREVER!
