Show 10 THE SIGNPOST Wednesday, May 30, 1990 Education school had awarding year By Chris Rassmussen Staff writer for The Signpost With the addition of the Swenson Gymnasium, the annual 'Families Alive' Conference and the Hemingway grant, excitement has been occurring on a regular basis at Weber State College's School of Education. However, Dean Richard Jones, believes that the greatest accomplishment of the past year is the amount of quality work students in the education fields are doing. Master's of Education degrees will be given to 16 students in the elementary education classification, and 18 in secondary education. Almost 100 students have petitioned for graduation in the field of elementary education. Twenty-three will receive a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, while an additional nine have completed the requirements for a dual major in these two areas. Thirty-three students will receive a minor in education. Students team while helping children learn at the Melba Lehner Children center . Dr. Richard Blake, started the special honor roll in January 1989, to recognize those students who, "...have been nominated by multiple faculty members for their exemplary attitudes toward learning and overall superior performance in teacher education studies..." At an awards ceremony held May 19, all graduating seniors were recognized for their accomplishments. The following awards were presented: Michelle Berry - Super Senior Award on behalf of the WSC Alumni Association; Traci Coles - Outstanding Student in Early Childhood Education Award; Claire E. Amy Cox was recognized for her work to the Melba Lehner Children's School. On May 22, the health, physical education, recreation and dance department held their fifth annual Swenson Awards banquet. The following were awarded: Jennifer Cutler - Swenson Physical Education Teaching Scholarship; Garth Gnieting-Outstanding Lifestyle Management Major Award; Pam Kelly and Jack Mehn-Outstanding Physical Educators honors; Steve Dawson - outstanding dance minor; Ann Dewey - outstanding minors in school health; Heather Clark - occupational community health; Teri Okleberry Spiers and Jack Mehn - outstanding coaching minors awards. Top student teaching awards went to Emily Tuckett and Ben Home.
