Show Wednesday, May 30, 1990 THE SIGNPOST 3 Champs highlight year By Jon Yorgason Sports editor of The Signpost The highlights of Weber State athletics were the two Big Sky Champions: the women's tennis team and the men's cross country team. Guided by the coach of 17 years, Keith Cox, the women's tennis team surprised everyone by winning their sixth consecutive conference title. The women expected a rebuilding year after losing Wendy Compton and Christina Beer to eligibility. Compton, the player who was the most winning player to ever grace a Wildcat uniform, became Cox's assistant. In came three new freshmen: Kristin Kelly (who won more matches than any other Lady Wildcat this year), Susie Ennenga and Monica Pond. Kelly became the Wildcats' No. 5 singles player, Ennenga served from her No. 6 singles position and Pond became the alternate and stepped in whenever necessary, which was quite often. At the Big Sky Southern Divisionals, all three performed admirably and guided the team to an undefeated mark and a berth in the Big Sky Championships. Kelly and Ennenga became eventual Big Sky singles champions along with junior Roxann Engle, who took home the No. 3 singles title. The Lady Wildcats finished with a 22-4 overall mark, 13-0 in Big Sky play. One name that should not be left out is the name of Lani Hunsaker. Kunsaker was the No. 5 singles champion in 1989 and jumped all the way to the No. 1 singles position and performed very well. She finished the year with a 23-12 mark. For numerous years, Coach Chick Hislop has produced winning teams in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. This year's men's cross country team was no exception. At the conclusion of the 1989 season, the team competed in the District Seven Cross Country Championships at Rose Park Golf Course in Salt Lake City. The Wildcats ran extremely well and finished third in the district and first in the Big Sky Conference.
