Two short-term summer programs are also available: the JAL stewardess program and the International Language College. ESL director, Tim Conrad, said, "This is a really good opportunity for Japanese students coming to the United States. They could learn the language in Japan, but when they walk out the door, they're still in Japan. Because they take classes with other American students and visit with American families, they also receive the cultural input." Dr. Candadai Seshachari, department chair, said, "Even as these visiting students brought a piece of Japan with them to enrich our knowledge of them, they will take back a piece of America with them to give to their families and friends. We are all richer for the experience.' The Weber State College English Alliance was recently developed. Directed by Dr. Gary Dohrer, faculty will meet with 20 middle and secondary teachers for a two-week workshop to promote and share classroom strategies and to redefine WSC's relationship with public education . Dohrer said, "In educating teachers, the research we do doesn't always reflect the realities of public schools. The benefit, then, is in matching theory and practical application for implementation in the classroom." The department in conjunction with Your Community Connection initiated a film series last fall. Approximately 60 patrons attended each of the five films which were shown every two weeks. This spring, four films are scheduled. In the last five years, the English department has redefined and reshaped its priorities and responsibilities. "As a result," Seshachari said, "the pressures and demands on the department have also significantly changed. We need to keep these and our own sense of what we are and what we want to become in mind especially with regard to the increasing enrollment pressures, the availability of resources and the institutional name change." Seshachari said, "Any changes will have to relate to our present profile and should not come at the expense of some excellent things we are now spearheading. We need to think in terms of more viable and less cost-intensive options in addition to the options we now have." With regard to WSC becoming an university, Seshachari said, "In the short run, it will not mean that we are in for any significant, programatic changes, but if I had to look for a change, I would look for it in both student and teacher expectations in terms of quality of work and themselves."
