Show Wednesday, May 30, 1990 THE SIGNPOST 9 Hislop's teams prove they're better than average ' -ii 1 Sports By Karen Packham Asst. Sports Editor of The Signpost 1989-90 was an exciting season for the Weber State men's cross country team, as they won the Big Sky Conference meet. The team was expected to go through a rebuilding period as they lost a few members to graduation and missions. The team came along stride by stride to show that they would be more than an average team. Coach Hislop explained that he had a few strategies that he tried differently this year to make his team peak at the right moment. "I decided to start the season a little later this year because the guys always seemed to peak the week before conference," Hislop said. The other area that he changed is he didn't take the guys toalotofbigcompetitivemeets. "I decided to race them in smaller meets against conference schools so they didn't get worn out on big competitive meets," Hislop said. Evidently his strategies had some positive effects on the team as they showed their willingness to compete at the conference meet. Most of the runners had personal bests and ran above what they were expected. Brett Williams was the first place finisher for the Wildcats at the conference meet as he finished the 10,000 meter race in an outstanding time of 31:23. The restofthe teamranatightraceas Bob Durtschi took 7th with a time Editor takes two (years) example, he should be able to answer the burning question: what in the hell are those rugbyltes' trying to prove? You'd think they'd learn the one valuable lesson taught by American football if you're going to beat yourself to death, at least wear shoulder pads and earn a decent salary for heaven's sake. Jon, as you're dining on fish and chips and rocking to BBC's channels one, two and three, remember that we wish you success and and a safe return. The Signpost bids a fond two-year farewell to one of this year's greatest assets its sports editor, Jon Yorgason. Jon leaves this afternoon to serve a two year mission in the Coventry England Mission. As a freshman, Jon has been both sports editor and assistant sports editor. Though The Signpost will miss his influence and the quality of his work, we can't help but wonder what titillating tidbits of sports trivia Jon will bring back to the colonies from merry old England. Brad Barton was the most valuable person for the 1990 season. He was the No. 1 runner for many meets and ran some outstanding races during the year. But competition was tough within the team as they had many quality athletes. A few members will be lost next year but most will be back and ready to put in another outstanding season. Christmas vacation was the break for most people but was the beginning of hard work for the men's indoor track team. The men trained early in the month of December to build up their base for the season that was soon to start. The highlight of the season took place during an indoor meet at Pocatello, Idaho when junior Brad Barton won the 1600 meter run and qualified for the NCAA national meet. Brad went on to compete in Indianapolis, Indiana at nationals. Barton didn't place but had the chance to see what the big competition is like. Flagstaff, Arizona was the site of the 1990 indoor conference championships. The men had many exciting races. Hurdlers John Wagstaff and Terry Kealamakia placed second and third respectively in the 55 meter hurdles. Wagstaff received the most valuable player award for the indoor track season. Many outstanding performances were seen during the 1990 season as the men finished fourth in the Big Sky Conference meet. Kurt Black, a sophomore who returned from a mission in December quickly got back into shape and placed 5th in the 5,000 meters.
