We must define the role and possibilities of advertising as a motive force of production... a properly designed and well-organized advertisement will quickly pay for itself many times over..." These are not the words of some Madison Avenue executive, but rather from Pravda, the official Communist Party newspaper in the Soviet Union. An increasing amount of advertising is appearing in the Soviet Union, though at one time it was labeled "the social weapon of the exploiting class." An increasing number of ads are appearing in Russian newspapers and magazines. At this stage, the advertising is still handled directly by the manufacturer. The Soviet advertising is still unsophiticated, compared to that of the American masters: "Today, on her birthday," starts one, "he wanted to give her a falling star, the morning dew on a flower, a sunbeam or something that would remind her of him every morning and night. But what? This evening, smiling happily, he handed her flowers, and a month's pass to ride the bus." And with the advent of advertising comes, naturally, deceptive and abusive ads. Pravda and other papers have complained of advertising used to dump outmoded products, and there are calls for a fair advertising code. The Russian equivalent of Madison Avenue is still a fledgling compared to its American counterpart, which bombards the average American with 1500 advertising images a day. rtMBHHfX Three journalist from the department of communications have been awarded Helen Cortez Stafford Memorial scholarships.
