Show Page 15 arises El r-- (Editor's Note: This is the second and final article in a two part series concerning how well Weber State College stacks up athletically to BYU, Utah and Utah State. Part one appeared in the May 4 issue of the Signpost) Track-Weber has a 2-10 overall track and field meet record against the other three Utah schools, but many of those "meetings were in big-multi-team invitationals. In the last four, years, Weber is 1-5 against USU, 0-2 against BYU and 1-3 against Utah. In a given year, Weber can beat USU and Utah in track-but probably not BYU which is usually the strongest track power in the Rocky Mountain area. Cross Country - Like in track, Weber has its up and down years here. Weber has rarely met Utah in the last four years for a cross country meet and when they did meet last fall, the Utes won handily by over 90 points. WSC is 0-4 against BYU in cross country, but in 1973 BYU barely nipped Weber 28-32. BYU is a national power in cross country, and took 8th place in last year's NCAA meet. But, against Utah State, Weber has a 7-0 victory string going-spread over the last three years. WSC can compete effectively in cross country against USU and sometimes Utah, but never BYU. Not BYU Wrestling-Overall, Weber has an 5-11 win-loss record against only USU and Utah. Weber has never met BYU in a dual meet, but has always been beaten by them in invitational meets. WSC is 2-6 against Utah State and 3-5 against Utah. As in cross country, Weber can handle USU and Utah in wrestling, but not BYU. Football- Weber is 0-5 against USU, Utah and BYU. Weber has scored only 47 points in those five games to their opponents 125. This equals a lopsided difference of 78 total points. WSC is 0-4 against USU and 0-1 against BYU. Weber has never met Utah in football. As of yet, Weber cannot respectably play against the other three Utah schools in football. However, in 1978-Weber plays Utah for the first time ever in a football game, BYU the next and from 1980-will play all three of the other Utah schools once a year. Even with USU Tennis-No comparative records are available, but Weber's tennis coach Keith Cox says that the 'Cats are about even on the courts with Utah State, while they are always out-classed by Utah and BYU. Weber just can't effectively compete in this sport except against the Aggies. Women's Volleyball- Weber is 7-17 overall against the other big three. Individually Weber is 6-2 against Utah; 1-8 against Utah State and 0-7 against BYU. Weber can compete in this sport well against Utah State but not against BYU or Utah. Women's Gymnastics - Similar to volleyball, Weber is out classed by two of the three schools. WSC can hold almost even with Utah State, but have to play out of their league when competing against BYU or Utah. Critically important What is the importance of Weber's compeition against Utah's other three major schools. According to John Peterson, Weber State's Sports Information Director, "Weber can't afford not to compete". Furthermore, President Joseph Bishop of Weber says: "Its critically important that Weber is competitive." Although he says that no one expects Weber to win all of the time, WSC still needs to play well and have close losses. He explains that in state rivalry is good for the community in that it stirs interest in athletics. Also, "It provides the financial base through gate receipts that support the program. Losing is not good for the spirit or gate." Proving that in state rivalry provides a financial base for the school's athletics is the fact that during the just finished basketball season a total of 125,000 people attended the . eleven basketball games which featured in state college games between BYU, Utah, USU and Weber. That's an average of 11,333 a game $890,121 budget But Weber still competes on the same level as the other schools only in the sports of Women's and men's basketball and Women's Softball. At the other sports, WSC is under par competitively. The main reason for this is funding. Weber State's Athletic budget is 890,121 dollars for its eleven sports. Exact budget figures for the other three schools are not available, but one can bet that they are higher considerably than Weber's is. This would be especially true for BYU. A good indicator of a school's athlectic budget is found in the cornerstone of its program-football. The higher the number of football scholarships that a school awards to players, then the higher the total athletic budget. Weber handed out 57 football scholarships last year vs. 105 for BYU, 90 for Utah and 80 for Utah State. In some sports, the talent found in Utah is not good enough and thus a school must recruit athletes out of state. Money is a factor here. For example in Weber's tennis program, only one out of state player is on the six member squad. But at BYU and Utah only ten percent or about one player on the team is from Utah-a total reversal. Where the funding comes from is the problem. Student fees provide some of the revenue for sports. At Weber $9.67 or 6 percent of a student's fees a quarter go to athletics. But Weber has only 8600 students, compared to 9000 for USU, 21,750 for Utah and 25,000 for BYU. Those schools can thus obtain more funding from that area. College athletics has turned into a big business and with continued inflation it must keep upping its budget to survive each year. Weber ultimately, be even par with those schools, Weber needs a budget nearly equal to theirs. 3SS22 n rrz LIQUID COOLED: 1974 GT-750 Suzuki, excellent condition. 4,000 miles, metalic blue with padded sissy bar.
