Show NORTHWEST NOTES. O. M. Welburn, ex-collector of internal in-ternal revenue, has been acqnitted on charges of embezzlement. This was his third trial. While under indictment Welburn fled and enlisted as a private in the army, firstgoing to Cuba. While on his way to the Philippines he was recognized in San Francisco and arrested. The eighteen commercial banks of San Francisco have filed with the bank commissioners their semi-annual statements state-ments which show a gain of $3,333,391 in deposits in the past four months. The combined gain of the state savings sav-ings and commercial banks in San Francisco in that period was S3, 727, 572, and the combined deposits of both in the city and State was S150,699,623. Mrs. Nettie F. Craven, who claims to be the widow of ex-United States Senator Sen-ator James G. Fair, won a partial "victory "vic-tory in Judge Troutt's court, when the court decided that she may prosecute her claim for a family allowance of S5000 a month. Mrs. Craven will now be permitted to prove, if she can doso, her contention that she is the widow of the dead Senator. The Comedy theater in San Francisco was destroyed by fire last week. The flames are supposed to have started in the scenery-room. The loss will exceed ex-ceed 825,000, The Comedy theater was formerly the Alhambra, one of the pioneer showhouses of the coast. Subsequently Sub-sequently it was known as the old Bush Street theater and more recently as the Comedy theater. Almost every actor of prominence in the school has played in this theater. Practically the whole of the Stuck river valley, Wash., is one vast sheet of water. The river itself is a raging flood, destroying acres of the most productive pro-ductive land in the state, and threatening threaten-ing some substan tial dwellings. It is higher than ever before known since the valley was settled by white men. Several families in the vicinity of Sumner Sum-ner have been compelled to move to escape es-cape the torrent. |
