Show Founder of Republican Party Dead. St. Paul, Minn., Dec. 29. Charles E. Pike is dead at his residence in this city. In early life he was one of the first Free Soilers, and one of the founders of the Republican party in Massachusetts. Massachu-setts. In 1S47, while a member of the Maine legislature, he wrote the reso- I lutions which according to the custom 1 of that time brought before the people I the name of Taylor for the presidency. Later he was one of the group of the first Republicans i the Massachasetts legislature. In 1S57 he removed to Wisconsin and founded the Oshkosh Northwestern, which during the war was a radical supporter of Lincoln. In 1865 he was appointed solicitor of the Internal Revenue department and assistant at-torner at-torner general of the United States. |
