Show DIVIDING .AFRICA. Statement That England,, Geruianyantl Portugal Por-tugal Have Agrped to a Division. Berlin, Dec. 29. Th.e Lokalauzeiger publishes the contents of the German-English-Portugese secret treaty. In order to prevent any interference by France or Russia, England concluded con-cluded a secret treaty with Germany regarding the complete partition of Portugese colonial possessions. Germany Ger-many is to receive all Portugese possessions pos-sessions in Asia that it to say, Timor, Goa, Damaio, Macoa and Diu, with 20,000 square miles of territory and 1,000,000 inhabitants. Germany further receives in Africa all Portugese territory north of Mozambique, Mo-zambique, except a strip of land three miles wide for Mr. Cecil Rhodes's trans-African railway. For this the German government will pay Portugal 25,000,000 -marks. The surprising part in the statement of the Lokalauzeiger is that it refers to Asia, when it has repeated been asserted as-serted at the Foreign office that the trea ty only refers to Africa and did not reJer to Asia. It must, however, be remennbered that the Lokalanzeiger was in a position to publish the Samoa treaty twenty-four hours before the official' publication took place. England Eng-land receives the remaining African possessions of Portugal, which contain two million square kilometers and have thirteen million inhabitants. The consent of Portugal to this arrangement ar-rangement has already been obtained in principle. The Lokalanzeiger declares de-clares it has the news from such a source thnt no demerit is possible. It is possible, if the story proves true, that President Kruger may now declars war on Portugal and attack Delagoa at once. I |
