Show Langley's Flying Machine. Washington, May 14. Professer S. P. Langley, secretary of the Smithsonian Smith-sonian Institute, the inventor of the aerodrome, who was given 825,000 by the board of ordnance to experiment with his flying machine for war purposes, pur-poses, made his first test at Quanflco, Va., Friday. The machine soared aloft to a height of 500 feet, but descended de-scended after a horizontal flight of 800 feet. His former machine, which was propelled by a small steam engine, flew three-quarters of a mile and only descended when the steam was exhausted. ex-hausted. It was understood Professor Langley was to overcome the limited power capacity of the former machine by the use of a condensing engine, which could repeatedly utilize the condensed con-densed steam from the boiler. |
