Show IT CAUSED DISC USSION. St. George Protest Regarded as Being Timely. Salt Lake Tribune. : The protest of the people of Dixie against the rates charged by the Utah & Pacific was a matter of much discussion discus-sion yesterday. It is now stated that just as soon as the road reaches Mc-Cune Mc-Cune and terminal facilities are completed com-pleted an effort will be made to adjust ad-just the rates, but that nothing can be settled until that time. The road has only six miles more to construct and it may be two weeks before the road is finished. It is admitted on all sides that the rates are too high. In fact there is little lit-tle need of a "local'' tariff on the Utah & Pacific as all its business will be through. This is shown by the local tariff between Milford and southern points, the figures on first-class being 21 cents to Lund, 50 cents to Modena and 56 cents-to McCune, Team charges would forever come under these rates and teamsters can be found to work at such rates. One railroad man stated yesterday that The Tribune's figures were a little too low, although the plan was correct and was the one that will probabely be adopted. His idea is to add 20 cents to the Milford rates to make rates for all Utah & Pacific points. That, however, will not prevent people teaming to Milford. Mil-ford. The only remedy is to apply the Milford rates to all Utah & Pacific points and allow the latter a fair arbitrary. |
