Show was either sent by wire or mail, in some cases by both, to the absent brethren. Presiden t Snow replied that he would return to the city in the evening; even-ing; in the afternoon it was learned that Elder F. D. Itichards had reached Ogden from Oregon the same morning, and later he came down to the city. About 5 o'clock in the afternoon a third telegram was received from President C'anDon stating that the body would leave Kan Francisco in a special funeral car that evening, and should reach Salt Lake City on Sunday morning. If the thus far invariable practice of the church is followed. Elder Lorenzo Snow, the president of the Twelve Apostles, will succeed President Woodruff Wood-ruff as the president of the church, aud there does not appear to be any reasons why this practice should he changed on the present occasion . There is no published revelation on this point, and it is held by many that the council of the Apostles are perfectly free to choose any one on whom they may unite: but it would be a great surprise sur-prise to the members of the church if any departure took place iu this instance. in-stance. The choice of Elder Snow to succeed President Woodruff will make Elder Franklin D. Richards, the present pres-ent church historian, president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. NEWS AT SALT LAKE. Nearly All the Apostles tVere Outside the City. Attondlnp; to Their Calling. Salt Lake City, Sept. 5. The first news of the death of President Woodruff Wood-ruff reached the Church offices in this city about 11:30 a. in. Friday, September Septem-ber 2nd, in a cipher telegram from President George Q. Cannon to President Presi-dent Joseph F. Smith. But a short time before, an earlier message had been deciphered, which stated that the president had had a very serious and sudden attack of sickness, from which it was feared he could not recover. As soon as possible, after receiving the news of his death, word was sent to the Twelve Apostles. President Lorenzo Lor-enzo Snow had that morning left Salt Lake for Brigham City; Elder Franklin Frank-lin D. Richards had not yet returned from Baker City, Oregon; Elders Brig-ham Brig-ham Y'oung and Heber J. Grant were the only ones in the city; Elder F. M. Lyman was at Kanab, Elder John nenry Smith at Rexburg, Idaho, Elder George Tcasdale at Nephi. Elder John W. Taylor in Colorado, Elder M. W. Merrell at Logan, Elder A. H. Lund at Ephraim. Elder M. F. Cowley at Preston, Pres-ton, Idaho, and Elder A. O. Woodruff either in Alberta, Canada, or on his way homeward. The sad intelligence |
