Show L rau fattening dairy steers Is profitable business I 1 the dairyman who has a number of bull calves on band hand that cannot ba be disposed of for breeding purpose I 1 often wonders what to do with then them when they have reached one yea year of 0 I 1 age can they be castrated cast rated dehorned and fattened for the market at that age by the breeder breeders themselves or can they be sold to men who are la lit the feeding business to answer the question the ther ohio sta tion conducted a feeding test with six holstein Il bull calves months of age when they weighed an average ot 0 pounds pet head the bull calve calves were dell dehorned orned and castrated in december 1921 and on january 17 1922 at the weight men cloned were put on feed a ration ot of ground corn oil meal mixed bay and corn stover being fed during a period of days they consumed an average of 14 pounds ground corn 2 25 5 pounds oil meal 4 4 pounds mixed hay and 2 A pounds corn stover on this they made mad a dally daily gain of 2 at pounds per head at a cost of 10 1010 16 per pounds gain during the same period a lot ot of angus calves averaging pounds per head were fed the same feeds they consumed about two pounds corn meal two pounds hay and one pound stover less per head than the dairy steers and gained 36 of a pound less per head bead per day the dairy steers in other words proved to be the heaviest eaters and also made a slightly larger gain per pound of feed consumed the dairy steers produced pounds of gain at a cost of 0 10 1010 16 and the angus steers at a 21 cost of 10 34 the dairy steers were put in the feed lot at a valuation of 4 0 Z per pounds and the beef steers at a value of 7 per hundred the former sold on the market tor for 8 50 and the latter hundred the profit on the for 9 75 a dairy steers was 1083 per head and on the beef steers 6 62 this test so far as one test of this showed con sort can prove anything elusively that dairy steers can be fed out at a good profit by the feeder when he bus buds them at th the e right price and make excellent use of 0 also that they their feed purebred ram shown to be best mutton producer breeding and feeding trials with two lots of ewes at the missouri expert ment station have shown that lambs from a purebred ram grow and fatten much taster faster and sell at much higher prices per pound than lambs from a scrub ram and exactly similar ewes the average total gain of the lamba lambs sired by the better ram was pounds more at three months 03 1 days of age than the average total gain of the lambs sired by the inferior ram at four months 1225 days of age the average dally daily gain of the better lambs was 2 20 8 6 per cent greater than that of the lot of lambs iambs sired by the inferior ram the feed eaten per pounds gain by the lot of lambs sired by the in farlor ram was 59 per cent more than that eaten by the lambs sired by the superior ram the grain eaten per pounds gain was 88 78 pounds for the former lot and only 52 81 pound pounds I 1 tor for the latter at three months of age the lambs sired by the ram of mutton type were pounds heavier and made a total gain of pounds greater than the lambs sired by the interior ram the lambs from the scrub sire required 28 per cent more grain per pounds gain than did the other lot lambs sired by the good ram sold for per pounds while those sired by the inferior ram brought only 4 50 per pounds the lambs from the good sire were thicker fleshed smoother broader la in back and lighter in the pelts than those from the scrub feeding fish meal or for protein all bogs hogs raised on the experimental farm of the united states department of agriculture at Belt beltsville mille md have been given fish meal or as their protein supplement since the department part ment demonstrated by a series ot of experiments that fish meal Is 1 as able as as a hog feed other studies have shown that shrimp bran a by byproduct product of th the e shrimp factories valuable protein feed tot for Is a wry very hogs shrimp bran was practically valueless before the department made this study now it Is worth almost aa as much per ton as as a hog teed feed make sure of Exer exercise elso locating the feeding place some distance from the farrowing house to force the young pigs to walk malk the distance for their feed and water mater Is ls a good way to make sure they get exer else vigorous litter of 0 pigs it if a brood sow bow gets one pound of skim milk tor for each pound of corn she consumes she will mill never go down domn in the back and it she is 1 other otherwise mise well cared for sl e will raise a stron strong healthy vigorous litter of pigs 4 ba A IL 1 1 III |
