ANGELES SAN BERNAAD IHO los angeles express some day within the near future the southern california motorist who now plans his vacation trip to the yosemite or yellowstone will make his arrangements to include a tour to the beautiful canyons of utah and nevada that have heretofore been closed to all but the most hardy be cause of poor road conditions and lack of accommodations the few visitors to the north rim of the grand canyon of the colorado to zion cannon and bryce canyon have brought back reports of the re beauty that greets the eye of the motorist throughout this won der region rock colorings stately crags stretch up almost into the clouds and more closely resemble ruined castles or ancient fortresses than mere piles of sandstone sand stretches where the eroded sandstone I 1 and volcanic rocks have been carried down by the eroshie water are form ed into mosaics and weird designs that seem to flow up and down over the rolling billows of the desert pla to build city oty cedar city utah 5 55 5 miles north of st george on the arrowhead trail will become the center distributing point for tourist travel and regular stage service wil be maintained be tween cedar city and zion canyon bryce canyon the cedar breaks and the north rim of the grand canyon under supervision of the union jacif ie ic railroad the first move in this direction as discovered by a reconnoitering party from J W leavitt and company for the oldsmobile in cal and nevada Is the news ob bained at cedar city that a room hotel at that point has been ed by the union pacific and Is being fitted up in preparation tor for the ex pecked tourist travel in the summer of 1923 this railroad has also con strutted ted a branch rail line from ced ar city to lund which takes the place of the stage lines the railroad from cedar city to lund passes through the iron moun tain district which Is now being de ve loped by pacific coast capital and which will furnish iron tor for los ange les and for shipment through los angeles harbor to foreign ports the happy combination of passenger and freight traffic makes this new branch rail line an assured profitable invest ment and will bring additional capi tal into a district that has much to offer both from the standpoint of the tourist and the investor A branch line of the union pacific has already been opened between delta on the main line to salt lake city and fil more utah bringing rail transports tran tion to still another section of this district rich in the beauties of nature and in mineral and agricultural pro ducts tourist lecca the oldsmobile four scouting party under the leadership of charles if bigelow secretary of the arrow head trails association and well known road and research engineer made a complete survey of this en tire section of southwestern utah and brought back a wealth of data on the possibilities of the district from the tourist and development standpoints the wild beauty of this high rocky mountain plateau with its numerous deep canyons cut into the face of the rock and sandstone ages ago by the glacial action colored with all the dash and abandon of an impression 1st yet with the perfect blending shades that artists have tried tor for ages to approach on their canvas is some thing that will appeal to the tourist visitor whether he lie reaches this region by rail or motor utah and nevada are both working hard to place their main roads in good condition for the expected trat and the side trips will also be made easier by work underway in the counties through which the roads run the sightly places are all fair ly accessible and they will afford the visitor something entirely new in scenic effect from what he has exper fenced at the grand canyon in the yellowstone park or on and that you named the indian war veterans who were burled buried in the st george cemetery but that you did not include my fath lather george II 11 crosby father served in the expedition against the indians ahat killed doctor whittemore and on at least two other expeditions and was sheriff ot of washington county in 1868 and 1869 and was drawing a pension for indian war service at the time of his rustlers of desert springs that drove ben tas ker from this section making se cure the home builders in their prop erty and lives while the name of george 11 II crosby and many others were not named in my address on memorial day they live in the hearts of the 3 people it was through my calling atten tion to the condition of the graves of dr whittemore and mcintyre that a suitable monument was erected I 1 have tried to impress upon those who mark the graves of such men as your father that something be placed there that future generations may know of the work they did tor for their fellow
