Show Bateman Gives Highlights Of Soil Conservation Report Made Recently By ALFRED H. BATEMAN A few highlights of the annual report of the supervisors of the Lower Vjrgin Santa Clara Soil conservation district are: 1. Soil-saving dikes and controlled con-trolled outlets approximately 17,-880 17,-880 linear feet of soil-saving dikes with controlled outlets have been established and 8,360 linear feet are planned for 1942. The value of soil-saving dikes are: (a) saves soil; (b) levels the ground gradually gradu-ally by washing and depositing valuable silts; (c) prevents gully erosion and (d) affords proper disposal of waste water. The building of soil-saving dikes has also helped to reclaim valuable cultivated land which can be' devoted de-voted to cultivated crops. 2. Stream bank protection approximately ap-proximately 11,520 linear feet of stream bank protection has been installed along the Santa Clara creek to protect many small farms. This includes cable and tree revetment and planting of 6,485 trees. 3. Other conservation practices .which were established may be summarized clearing floodways, 610 linear feet; gullies treated, 25; water spreading, 83 acres; terracing, 51 acres; rodent control, con-trol, 1,312 acres; rotations, approved, ap-proved, 998 acres; fertilizating, 628 acres; irrigation system treatment, treat-ment, 6,164 acres; controlled grazing, graz-ing, 1,014 acres; stock watei structures, 1. 4. Educational activties a total of fifty meetings were held during dur-ing the year with a total attendance attend-ance of 3,008.
